sick cat? allegeries?
my cats have been getting sick. and two of them have gotten better before i could take them to the vet. its like insane sneezing and drooling and open mouthed breathing.. and then before the vet opens they are perfectly healthy again. what could be causing it.. i took the two that cured seemingly in hours to the vet the next day. and they got clean bills of health. but now ive got two more with the same exact symptoms. does anyone know what is causing it> i do give them wild catnip that grows in the yard. and the father of the kittens had been diagonsed with a dandelion allegery.. okay. i forgot to add it could be one of two things im thinking ive removed them both from where she is and she seems to be getting better. we got one of those instant water dishes. and the first cat got sick the day after we got it. so it could be the catnip from the yard or the water dish. . i just hope she just doesnt die on me untill her vet openes.(three more hours)

- Smoke? Perfume? Dust..could be any of them.
- My cat did the same thing and now I'm stuck with a vet bill! Anyways though, she was allergic to the litter we were using (I think) and there are so many allergens in the air this spring, it could just be something outside. Sometimes it's better not to open the windows and stuff and vaccuum what you bring in from outside...in short, it's probably just allergies.
- Kill it.It will work.
- From the speed of onset and recovery I woudl say that viruses and/or infections are unlikely. Cats can get asthma - this can be triggered by allergies, or be spontaneous. Cats can get hayfever-like allergies to a wide variety of substances, including detergents, foods, dust, plants, etc, so it could be any of these. Consider carefully what they had contact with in the hours before they became unwell. If you can identify a potential source, keep it away from them. Check that they didn't eat or swallow a bee, or get bitten by a spider - those things can cause similar signs to allergies in some situations. If you see the vet again, explain the signs and that the animal recovers fast - ask for potential explanations. Suggest allergies. Don't walk away with no answers.
- Sounds like they could have eaten/ingested something foul tasting.
- Allergies are hereditary. So since you say the father is allergic to dandelions and there are plenty of dandelions out right now, I suspect that is it. Avoid giviing them the catnip for a while. My Siamese male has asthma. I have to use an inhaler on him.
- "Stuck with a vet bill", sgrjackson1? Hate to break it to you, but vet bills are part of owning a pet. Would you gripe about paying the pediatrician for treating your kid? Lacey, I would take the cats back in-- it sounds a respiratory infection. You have multiple cats showing the same symptoms. Chances of all of them having allergies are slim. Most likely you have some kind of "bug" going around. Have them checked. And if you're concerned that one might "die on you", you should go to an emergency clinic. A second possibility is that there is some kind of irritant. However, it's best to get the sick ones in for a checkup and if needed, some antibiotics or other medicine (an appropriate antihistamine, etc.).
