My 8 year old Siamese cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure: his severe diarrhea wont stop please HELP?
I took my beloved cat to the vet three days ago after he had a serious bout with vomiting white foam and clear fluid. I was horrified to discover he has the first stages of Kidney failure. After the massive pet food recall scandal, we lost his sister last summer. Now Elvis is presenting similar symptoms. The vet gave him oral pastes to line his stomach. And Neosol drops (Neomycin sulfate) 0.75 mg twice daily. Today when i called the vet she told me to increase the neosol to three times a day, and take his food away for 24 hours. She sent us home with Medi-Cal reduced protein formula. And recommended tomorrow switching him to a sensitivity diet if the diarrhea persists. The bloodwork revealed: UREA - 19.4 CREA 323 He was given 200cc Sub Q fluids. I am fearful he is still losing fluids and at terrible risk for dehydration. Also if we have to switch foods the sensitivity diets are not the best for his kidneys. Is there anything at all I can do for my cat to help him regain his health

- You can only do what the vet says as they know best. My grandmothers 5 year old cat has chronic kidney failure and goes to the vet for rehydration once every week now. His was caused by a reaction to anesthetic when he had surgery, though. As well as doing what the vet tells you, just make sure he's comfortable and not suffering. There's nothing more you can do.
- You can take a syringe and try to give it that stuff Pedi-a-light -a baby's drink or the store brand (clear kind) . It has minerals like Zinc and vitamins A-E. The best part is that it is full of Electro-lights which help hydrate or rehydrate-which ever you may need. I tried to do that for my cat when he got poisoned but I knew his Kidneys had failed and he died. I have given it to my other cat when she was vary ill. I hope your cat makes it. Like you said after the massive pet food recall scandal many pets died. Many people who bought that more expensive food had pure bread pets. There are class action law suites still going on still from that.
- Since he can't have solid foods my best recommendation is get some powdered kitten milk formula. His body being weak is not able to handle regular milk and right now powdered formula will be best for his weakened immune system. I also highly recommend liquid feline vitamins be administered as directed such as Nu-cat as this will help his body by supplementing any vitamins he isn't able to acquire from being on a liquid diet that should also help him to recover. - Some questions for you to ask the vet: Can they teach you to do fluids at home? Daily fluids are really the best thing for cats in kidney failure, and can make a significant difference in their well-being. It's really pretty simple to do at home once a vet tech shows you how. Could the Neosol be upsetting his stomach? Many antibiotics have the side effect of an upset stomach in cats. Siamese are notorious for having a sensitive stomach (I have or had lots of them - I do Siamese cat rescue). What diet alternatives do you have? If he won't eat the Medi-cal, there are other brands of food out there. From what I hear, Royal Canin's prescription diet tends to be prefered over the other brands. One of the keys of keeping a cat with kidney issues healthy is getting them to eat, and that can be tricky. Speak to your vet also about using Pepsid for him. The kidney issues can produce a condition similar to human heartburn, and that can produce the white foam and refusal to eat. The Pepsid seems to work really well in preventing it. What about his teeth? There really is a link between peridontal disease and kidney failure (cats and humans!). With many of our Siamese, we've seen kidney numbers improve greatly after having any dental issues taken care of. Once the kidneys don't have to process all that bacteria in their mouths, they function better. Just some suggestions for you, there never are any easy answers. Good luck with him!
- Doesn't sound quite right to me. Here are some links for you to check out asap - http://www.felinecrf.org/ http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/FelineCRF-FD/ Low protein diets are not required in early stages - that is a myth that vets still don't seem to get. Right now you need to get the vomitting and diahrea under control and keep him hydrated.
- I am sorry to hear about Elvis' trouble. Renal failure is very common in cats....they are born with kidneys too small to handle their carnivore diets. Their kidneys wear out much too soon, but with special veterinary diet foods, canned and dry and sub-Q fluids several times a week, he can regain most of his health. But, it also sounds like he has a digestive tract problem that your vet will try to correct or make better. It may take some time and patience to find the answers but listen to your vet. He or she is Elvis' best hope at this time.
