Health problems that cause cats to stop using litter box?

My adult female tuxedo cat has stopped using the litter box about a year and a half ago. We've taken her to the vet, but I can't figure out why she suddenly stopped using her litter box. She is spayed, by the way. What are the most common health problems (and their symptoms) that cause a cat to stop using their litter box for a year and a half???

Public Comments

  1. Unrinary Tract Infection
  2. COMMON health issues are the possibility of a urinary tract infection, or even crystals in the urine. BTW, I am really surprised that your cat has been doing this for so long?? Do you ever see any blood in the urine? Does your cat seem to meow a lot more, especially right before urinating? You are doing the right thing, by taking your cat to the vet! (Hope you can resolve this) :}
  3. its kin-dove weird but why don't you train your cat to use outside or the toilet or why my cat been on a litter box for three years now
  4. I am posting a link to non-health related problems which may give you some clues. Litter box issues usually result in total avoidance of the litter box. For urination avoidance, a urinary tract infection is the most common reason. For defecation avoidance, impacted anal glands or constipation. When they get pain using the litter box, they avoid the litter box for doing that particular 'number'. But it is not common for them to have both problems at the same time. So I would suspect it is a litter box issue.
  5. some times it is the type of litter. some cats do not like certain litters
  6. I would take her to a different vet to have them look over her and a different opinion on it. Usually the first sign to health problems with a cat is they willl not use the litter box, they are smart animals and they know when something is wrong so they find a way to give signs to you saying somethings wrong. Other things that cause this? -Did you change litter(brand)? -Change litter box? -Get a new cat/animal? -Moves houses? -Change in routine?
