Cat Health Symptoms

Has anyone heard of feline hyperestesia? I have a 3 y/o male tabby cat and about 4 wks ago he attacked?

the tip of his tail so badly that we had to have the end amoutated. Since then he seems to be fixated on his tail. He will stare at his tail with a strange look in his eyes and then try to bat it with his paw. He also exibits other signs of this disease.

  1. Yes, and I recommend checking out "petplace.com" and search under cats for FHS (feline hyperesthesia syndrome). There are explanations for the disease as well as some possible treatments to help de-stress your cat's environment.... Good luck and hope you can help your kitty!
  2. I've read about feline hyperesthesia before. I believe it was in a book by Pam Johnson-Bennett about cats with strange behaviors. It sounds like your cat has a serious problem. I hope it can be helped.
  3. My kitten started twitching and rolling her hind area a lot, so I brought her to the vet thinking perhaps she had fleas. The vet said he thought she had Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome, which is pretty much neurological. He wanted to give her medication, similar to seizure medicine. I opted not to treat her with pills becuase I was nervous about the side effects and the vet said the condition is not life-threatening. I noticed that my cat is still twitching and rolling her back, but she does not bite or scratch herself, so it is not super serious- I am just monitoring it. If your cat is exhibiting mutilation behavior, then definitely get him on medication, but regardless you should see your vet.
