Cat Health Symptoms

Why does my cat love to lick leather?

I have a backpack on wheels, which has leather strips on the back. One of my cats will lick the leather for several minutes at a time. My other cat completely ignores it. I read on a website that this is a symptom of internal parasites, but both cats were recently dewormed. Besides, the other cat doesn't do it. Can anyone tell me why my cat does this, and is it dangerous? There must be chemicals in the leather, which I would assume are toxic. But my cat's been doing this for several months, so if it was poisonous he probably would have had health problems by now.

  1. Some leather tastes good. When I was a little kid I would find myself teething in my mom's leather purse handle. I don't think it will hurt it unless it starts eating pieces of it.
  2. cause it taste like chicken
  3. Must be the salt.
  4. Hes hungry
  5. cow fetish?
  6. It probably has some kinda of catnip effect to your cat. Mine used to lick my purse strap and gnaw on it. Nothing happened to the cat it was perfectly healthy and died of old age.
  7. maybe they like the smell and if they lick it will taste it. *:o)
  8. Your cat, like all cats, large and small, are carnivores. Leather after all, is the hide of cattle. Your other cat may not be attracted to the smell or taste of it but the fact remains that this one is. If you're worried about it, don't leave the backpack in a place where it;s readily accessable to that cat. Put it away some where else!!! It's all up to you. You are the inteligent one.
  9. Cats will lick just about anything..
