- Spaying cuts down on the risk of ovarian and breast cancer in cats, as well as keeping her hormone level negligible - so no horny howling cat in your house. Not mating also decreases her exposure to feline immunodeficiency virus - a death sentence. Not mating means you don't have to find responsible homes for her kittens. Most shelters won't adopt out unless spayed or neutered so I'm surprised you have an unaltered female. I love my cats but I do spay and neuter. I know that my local shelter will have the right kitten or cat for me when the time comes that I have an empty spot in my home.
- An entire (non-desexed) female cat is at risk of pyometra, cancers of the female reproductive tract, cancers of the mammary gland, mammary gland hyperplasia (they get huge and hideous), abuse from people who are angry at the constant yowls of a female cat in heat. Allowing a cat to mate doesn't remove any of these risks, except that she will come off heat if she is pregnant. But they you have all the risks associated with pregnancy to deal with. Not to mention if you keep a cat entire, you will have all the local tom cats come to pay a visit, and even if they can't get to her you will be listening to cat fights and calls all night, and wake up to hte distictive smell of male cat urine on your doors and windows in the morning.
- For an intact cat, health hazards include pyometra, and mammary cancer. They are much healthier and happier when spayed and neutered, and have no risk of contributing the pet overpopulation. http://www.spayusa.org
