Cat Health.............? is swollen lymph nodes a symptom of upper respiratory infection in cats?
What are the symptoms of cat anti-freeze poisoning? I know, I should have her at the vet instead of trying to ask questions on Yahoo. I am a single parent that has been out of work for two weeks with the flu and will be out two more weeks from complications-plus no health insurance. My cat has not eaten in acouple days. She approaches the food as if hungry but does not eat. She has a slimey clear discharge coming out of her mouth. Please, is there anything I can do?
My cat has constant health issues. I've been looking into purchasing health insurance. Any recommendations? Every now and then my cat will develop symptoms of kidney disease and its been real expensive to have him treated. I've considered purchasing health insurance for him but don't know which one I should go with. Which is better and why?
CAT HEALTH: Cat has thickened bladder wall, vomiting & anxiety? Please take the time to read through this. I am trying to do what is best for my cat and need help. Fist, I HAVE taken her to two veterinary doctors. Nine year old Female. Short hair. Spayed. She lives exclusively indoors. Her litter mate lives with us and I have two German Shepherd dogs. All female. We've all been together for 4 years. I feed her top quality food only. (Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken). She always has fresh water. I have two litter boxes and use Tidy Cat Multi Cat clumping. Symptoms: sudden behavior change of urinating outside her litter box. She cries while she is looking for a place to urinate (laundry basket, towel on the floor used to clean mud off dogs feet, and dog's toy box). She does not seem to have a frequent urge to urinate. This is a NEW behavior and NOT every time she needs to urinate. She nearly always uses the litter box. She has always puked but it seems more often now. The vomit seems to be mostly food and hair. I see NO bile. The first doctor did a bladder ultrasound and said her bladder wall was thickened. She prescribed three days of antibiotics and PROZAC, saying that this condition is almost always associated with stress & anxiety. She was not able to obtain a urine sample. We gave her the antibiotic but not the Prozac because we are simply not convinced about the anxiety. There have been no changes in our household that would cause anxiety or stress. However, she still looks for inappropriate places to urinate. So, we took her to another vet doctor who also could not get a urine sample and agreed with the first doctor--most likely cause is stress & anxiety. So.... I'm thinking I should try two things: First, fur ball treatment Second, something for anxiety I'd like advice about good brands for both. I am very picky about what I give my animals. Also, if you can provide any other insite about this situation, please do so. Thanks
Symptoms of cat kidney failure? I have a 19 year old cat who has NEVER had a health problem, never been to the vet except for the annual checkup and shots, eats Orijen kibble and raw food. Lately I've noticed him getting a bit slower, drinking a lot of water.. he is booked for a vet appointment on Thursday.. could this be kidneys? If so what treatment is there?
Can black mold spores hurt my cat? While away I lock my cat in a little 'cat room', an 8x8 extra bedroom in my apartment. There is a china cabinet in there he loves to hide under. I took apart the cabinet and found the entire wall behind it was covered in fuzzy black mold from a leak our neighbors had months ago. The apartment is taking care of it, but do I need to be concerned for my cats health? He hasn't shown any odd symptoms at all.
Health problems that cause cats to stop using litter box? My adult female tuxedo cat has stopped using the litter box about a year and a half ago. We've taken her to the vet, but I can't figure out why she suddenly stopped using her litter box. She is spayed, by the way. What are the most common health problems (and their symptoms) that cause a cat to stop using their litter box for a year and a half???
Rabies Symptoms-Cat/Human? I am freaking out. I picked a stray cat up yesterday. I saw it's eyes were all full of mucus and it was extremely thin. I am such an animal lover and couldn't leave the thing to die. I put in my garage, called the local shelter to help and they gave me antibiotics to buy time until the vet appt on monday(I have absolutely zero money to pay for vet bills, the shelters here are swarmed and are not taking in cats- thanks to those who do not spay/neuter) So I never thought the cat would be rabid b/c it is very very friendly despite being sick. I was under the impression that if an animal had rabies it would froth at the mouth and be mean. Upon reading up on the internet I read that an animal can be friendly. Okay so my dilemma is that I held the cat, administered antibiotics, and I do not recall be scratched but I do have a faint line on my hand that appears to be a scratch and now I read the symptoms of rabies in humans and I don't know if my mind is playing tricks, but my arm is feeling funny. I am scared to death- I do not have health insurance!!! AHHH. Again this scratch is faint, so am I at risk? Should I go the emergency room? How long after a scratch should I feel anything? I found the cat yesterday. The cat was kneading its paws on me so I am just being paranoid and thinking that its claw swiped me gently....
(cat health) Rolling Back Syndrome? Does anybody have any info or tips on this that is not already posted on the Internet? Personal experience with symptoms, treatments, coping strategies? One of our Aby cats has this; I refuse to medicate him heavily because his seizures are mild to moderate and far apart. Need info.
Cat Health Problem? On 6-1-08 my cat started showing odd signs. My usually hyper cat was just acting lazy. I thought nothing of it because well its a cat, but this morning on 6-2-08 my cat was listliss and just laying down mowing. About an hour later she started to bleed from her rectum. I took her to the vet and the vet has been pumping her with steroids, vitamin k, and fluids. The vet has also ran blood tests, coagulant tests, running a cathetar and using a heating pad. The vet is clueless about her condition because she hasn't thrown up, there is just blood from the rectum but not her stool and all the tests have come back fine. I am a medical assistant, but this is so overwhelming. I love my cat more than anything and I just wanted some tips, advice or even support would be great. I also should mention she was diagnosed with feline leukemia, but none of her symptoms are related to that. We have also checked for poisons around the house, but it is hard when it is a cat. PLEASE HELP I BEG YOU. Actually, my vet said that he was clueless. I have run up a pretty hefty bill and they are running every test. Kidney disease came back negative.
question regarding cat health? i know my daughter in law posted a question not long ago about her cat peeing on her bed. someone suggested butter on the cats feet as a way to clean and relax (it didn't work). the cats been moved quite frequently. and spent sometime riding cross country in a big truck. but the cat also vomits frequently. he was vetted just before they moved here to TN and had a UTI which has cleared up. the cat is about 2 1/2 yrs, and she got him from a pet store (yuck i know, but she didn't know how bad that could be). he's never been tested for Feline Leukemia. he has a beautiful velvety coat. what are the symptoms for Fe. luke? we're going to have some blood work etc done, but right after the holidays plus my car breaking down, has limited our funds until next week. he doesn't seem distressed. eating and drinking normally. other than fe. luke, what should i ask my vet to test for? the cat has never been outside except on a leash when they were in the truck. he's not in a truck anymore. they moved here a few weeks before Christmas. and "K" keeps the litter box immaculate. because he also used MY bed as a litter box, he's now restricted to their room.
Advice on cat health? I have an adult male cat (13 yrs old as of April 2008). He has always been a 'typical' male cat- good appetite, normal shedding, normal bowel movements and urination (no out of the ordinary litter box issues), and normal attitude/temperment. About the last few months or so however, he appears to be losing weight. I have had several differing opinions on what may be the cause, such as diabeties and tapeworm, and what to do. I believe that it is probably just old age, as he is now 13 yrs old, because his appetite and attitude and EVERYTHING else is still the same. ONLY difference/change is the weight loss. Has anyone else had an experince with an older cat? A similar situation? What was the cause? Outcome? Should I take him (and possibly a stool sample) in for a 'checkup'/testing? Or would I be wasting money, just to be told I am correct, that it's old age (since there are no other 'symptoms')? Thank u for all answers so far. Just wanted to add a bit more info. I do know his teeth are fine, as he is having NO trouble eating (even hard food) or change in appetite 9not eating any more or less). Also, I do not have him on 'seniors' food, but he eats special food that is for urinary tract health (PH balance). He did have a bladder infection yrs ago, and a blocked bladder quite a few yrs ago (different times). The vet at the time of the blocked bladder said that in a lot of cat foods (esp. cheaper brands) there are 'crystals' that can build up over time and eventually block their bladder/urethra. He recommended the special diet of hard food that is specially made for urinary trac health, and he has been on it ever since- yrs now. Both of these are no longer issues. just wanted to clear up that i know it's not his teeth causing an eating problem or him not being on food for seniors. And to "Gracy" , Maybe we should just put you to sleep! U heartless B*tch!!
Cat - Health Advice? (Part 2)? Hi everyone, Some of you might remember my last question regarding my cat. Well he had his x-ray today (no sedation as he was a good boy) they said he’s def got some form of ‘growth’ somewhere around his kidney/liver area. However they said that they were unable to see where exactly it was nor could they decide what it was. They’ve offered to operate to find out more but because of his age they said it was very risky. They said if it is a cancerous growth then symptoms could appear within hours and he could be dead within 24 hours of them starting (which scared me to death) but in the same breath they said it could be nothing. Anyone any suggestions as terrified of something happening to him especially if it could be treated but it could be nothing and i'm worrying for no reason! Thanks
my cat.s health has deteriorated fast, help please? okay so at first we thought it was age, since she.s like 12 or so years old. but it all happened within a week, so we.re wondering if she has an illness she used to be a fatty, weighing in at around 10-12 pounds. within around two weeks she.s down to 8 pounds. she rarely eats anymore. she used to go bonkers when mom ate string cheese && cry for some, but now she doesn.t even look at us when we eat it. i started giving her wet food since apparently it.s supposed to be better for her. i.m nervous that this could be the cause so i stopped, but she wouldn.t eat any dry food. she.ll only eat friskies indoor treats for some reason. she also has a lot of leg pain && weakness. she doesn.t like when we hold her anymore because it hurts her legs. she doesn.t jump on anything, && she.s always laying down so basically, it started with joint pain months ago, like something old cats go through, then she stopped eating as much && rarely walks around. are there any obvious cat problems that have these symptoms? why did it all happen so quickly? i.m so scared. she.s been my best friend since i was three && a half. i.m so scared of losing her. i don.t know what to do. we.re going to take her to the vet, but i want to know now. please help me, && give me any tips to do for her in the meantime.
vet techs/cat experts-health question, please help? 2 weeks ago, took my dogs to dog park.they started coughing/sneezing 2 days l8r.then the cats started.evry1 upto date, yearly vaccines.wont go to a dogpark again!evr1 had antibiotics.one cat still seems a bit listless, but she is not very energetic,so i dont kno if im imagining it.she is eating/drinking.finished meds, but still sneezing maybe3-5 times daily.i held my head to her side to try to hear her breathe, heard some crackly sounds.thought she might be getting pneumonia, but then realised the upper part of her body sounded ok,the crackles were farther down her side.so now, dont know if im hearing breathing or bowel sounds.my husband says she seems fine and if she had anything serious, she would stop eating/drinking.we are running lo on cash,if its necessary to bring her in,i will do it 2morro.but my husband thinks im imagining/being overprotective.what are signs/symptoms of pneumonia in a cat?should i go to vet again,or am i making moreof this than it is?
My 4 month old cat is having some strange/scary symptoms? She is trembling with her mouth half open and ears layed back. At the same time, she starts to walk, but she quickly loses her balance and falls down. Her tail is also puffy, like she is scared of something. Now, she's hidden under the bed. I think she's not well at all. What is happening to her? I'm so worried about her health! (I can't take her to the vet, the clinic is closed, it is 10 p.m.)
I have a serious question about my cat's health? okay so i'm sorry this is long. I'm 15 years old, and I got my male kitten Gizmo last year around this time ( September 21 ). He is about a year old now, and my vet recently diagnosed my cat with what he think is most likely FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis). My cat is showing a few symptoms like fluid in the belly, jaundice, a little lethargy, and he's a little warm and possibly some constipation. We thought he had worms, and his belly started to grow about a few weeks ago. We had no idea what it was and it's not like it was that noticeable. He is eating fine, and drinking, up walking around playing (a little), and even purring, and cleaning himself, and going to the bathroom. He has grown so close to me, and I'm tearing up just typing this. I love him more than the world. Please don't tell me, "Oh put him to sleep" my vet didn't even reccommend this. He seems fine, he just really isn't 'himself'. I just didn't get a chance to ask him whether any cat has ever survived FIP. Does anyone know IF ANY CAT HAS EVER SURVIVED FIP? I would really like to know, my cat seems to really be fighting this off, and he's being strong! He tested negative for liver damage, FIV and other harmful things. Also he has never gotten sick, he is an indoor-only cat and seems to have a pretty strong immune system. Does anyone know if he has a chance at surviving this. Me and my family are going to do/get anything that will help him feel better. Also my cat is not having trouble breathing. He is breathing ok. If anyone could answer my few questions that would be great. I really would like to/ need to know. THANKS A MILLION!!!
My cat has FIP like symptoms, what can I do? This past Wednesday I discovered my cat had fluid in his abdomen, this was discovered on a visit to the vet regarding his teeth. The vet removed the fluid which was amber in color with a frothy top, almost like a beer. The vet said it was not typical FIP fluid, and that my cat had no classic symptoms of FIP. However after sending the fluid to the lab to be tested for cancer, it came back that it had inflammation, blood work, ultrasounds, x rays and several trips to the vet, the fluid was sent out again thins time for a FIP PCR. According to things I have read online my cat has several of the symptoms of "wet" FIP. As I sit and wait for the results of this PCR test my cast health continues to decline. I went to another vet for a second opinion today and she withdrew some more fluid. My cat is very lethargic, he refuses to eat, he's drinking like crazy, he has not had a bowel movement in at least 2 days supposedly due to not eating, all he wants to do is lay on the tile floor in the bathroom or in the bathtub. He is very unsteady on his back legs, and his head is occasionally twitching. I do not want to see my baby suffer, but it does not seem like he is ready to move on yet. Just a week ago he was a healthy as could be, running, playing, eating, all the things normal healthy kittys do! I would like my healthy kitty back and I am hoping for some advice on what to do before it is too late, which I fear it may already be! My vet has given him calvamox for an abcess in his mouth, tooth related, and tonight he was perscribed Buprenorphine for pain. I can not tell if he is in pain or not, although he does appear to be. Hopefully tomorrow we will be trying inferon to see if that will work. I read online that it is very succesfull in treating both forms of FIP and when I contacted my vet she was very willing to find it for me, even contacting her husband, who is a vet in a city area and sees a lot of shelter cats, both her and her husband said they have seen very good sucess in treating FIP with inferon, but then I read online that "wet" FIP produces high levels of inferon so treating with inferon does more damage than good. I am very confused! I do not know what to do. I do not want to see my best friend suffer, and i do not want to prolong his life just to ease my suffering, but I do not feel it is his time to go, and i do not feel he is ready to go. I do not want to put him to sleep and find out it was not FIP, but regardless of what it is fluid in the abdomen is never a good thing. I also have another cat that I brought into my home in Feb of this year. I do not know if it is possible he brought the FIP virus into the home or if it is something that my cat has had for a while. The cat with possible FIP was a stray, but I do beleive he had a home before I took him in. He was very friendly and affectionate. The new cat belonged to my x boyfriend, unfourtanetly I do not know the cat's past medical history and obtaining any records or information is completely out of the question. I plan to get the new cat tested but have been told that the test is not very accurate. I have also seen that FIP is stress related and that the mutation of the Coronavirus to FIp can be cause by stress. The cat that possibly has FIP does not travel very well, and usually has to be given xanax for trips to the vet. At the beginning of august I was forced to take the cat on a 45 minute car ride without being able to give him xanax, I am wondering if this may have triggered the FIP and if this may have triggered something? I also live in a home with my parents, my brother, his fiancee, their 2 year old daughter and 3 dogs that bark at everything. This is a pretty stressful enviroment for me, my father is pretty high strung and always yelling at or about something, the dogs are always barking and the baby is always chasing the cats. I can only imagine if the enviroment is stressful for me it must be worse for the cats. So, living in this enviroment, and having no other living options, how do I maintain a stress free life for my cats? Thank you to everyone who answered. Toast passed away this morning around 8:30 am. I am terribly sad that he is gone, but it was his time I suppose. He will be missed very much. He was such a special cat. He had a wonderful personality. He was always full of mischief and suprises! I will miss my baby very much, but I know he is in a better place now. :-(
What, if any, health issues do Bengal cats have as a breed? Many purebred dogs and cats have particular problems that are common for that breed. Do Bengal cats have any common health issues? What are they, and what symptoms should I look out for? The exotic breed of domestic cats, not the tigers, and not the football team.
Cat odor and health issue? My father-in-law has 6 cats and his house STINKS!! he is all the time complaining of sinus infection and sore throat. But will not even entertain the idea that the cat odor may be the problem. My husband and I went in there for only 5 min and now both of us have sore throats and headaches. Is there any site that will show the hazards and symptoms of breathing in all of that odor on a daily basis. He prides himself on being so healthy @ 63 (never smoked, drank or used drugs,) but I swear that smell is going to kill him. My hope is to be able to show him proof that the odors are not good for him.
Cat's black fur turning red? She's an elderly cat whose black fur is turning red. She is an outdoor cat and gets a lot of sun exposure, but this has always been the case but this year the fur is MUCH more red than any other year. Is "rusting" fur a symptom of any cat health problem? Or is this just sun bleaching? BTW....I live in the country and she is welcome to live indoors but she won't. I bring her in and she climbs the walls and rushes out the first chance she gets. (Just wanted to let you know. I would rather she live inside)
Cat Nutrition and Health: (Raw Feeders)? If Kidney Disease, kidney Failure tend to run in some breeds of cats, (for one the Siamese breed). If you want to try to prevent it in the first place, WHY? can't you feed your cat a kidney diet to begin with? Why, wait till symptoms appear. (it is usally too late by then). I'm talking about Raw Feeders here, Not commercial food feeders. Is it because the kidney diet would be too low of protein or etc... for a non kidney prob. cat? Thanks, God bless. Been pondering this for a while now.
I found a stray cat with confusing symptoms!? I recently came across what I believe is a stray cat. His/her hair is very coarse, and of course, he/she is very thin. The hair is fuller at the front of their body than the back, and the end half of the tail is fuller than the tail closest to the body. I have 2 cats now and can't afford to take this one to the vet, but what can I do to nurse it back to health with meds I can buy at the store? (dewormer, etc)... I would really like to help this cat get healthy! Please give me some ideas! P.S. Yes, I'm feeding it! lol Hey Good Kitty...it's saying your username does not allow emails...email me at BethyBoop3eb@yahoo.com and I will try to send you a pic tonight if the cat comes back or in the morning. THanks!!!
Why does my cat love to lick leather? I have a backpack on wheels, which has leather strips on the back. One of my cats will lick the leather for several minutes at a time. My other cat completely ignores it. I read on a website that this is a symptom of internal parasites, but both cats were recently dewormed. Besides, the other cat doesn't do it. Can anyone tell me why my cat does this, and is it dangerous? There must be chemicals in the leather, which I would assume are toxic. But my cat's been doing this for several months, so if it was poisonous he probably would have had health problems by now.
My 19 yr old cat has an increased appetite, but no other symptoms of hyperthyroidism...any ideas? My 19 year old cat has decided to go on an eating binge. It could be the change of seasons - all my cats kinda adjust certain behaviors as seasons change. But Em is just always, always hungry. She's not been quite this adamant about eating before. So I naturally thought hyperthyroidism. But she has not one single other symptom. Not a one. She hasn't lost weight, she hasn't gained weight, she hasn't gotten frisky, she isn't drinking extra water, no troubles in the kitty litter, her fur is as beautiful as always... Does anyone have any thoughts on possible other causes? I'd like to consider other causes before I drag my poor little old lady off to the vet. And no, don't worry - I won't take your advice as a substitute to a visit to my vet. I've had my sweetie for 19 years - I'd not risk her health now.
Does anyone know of health problems with Peterbald cats? We have an 8-month old Peterbald who has had continual repiratory ailments. Antibiotics worked temporarily but symptoms (sneezing, wheezing, wet coughing or hacking) always returned. He recently had a scope inserted to investigate problems in the nose, throat, ears, etc. Nothing found. The vet is now recommending a CT scan and possible surgery to widen the opening in the throat (a $1500 procedure). Anyone who has an idea - please respond.
Could my favorite cat be sick? Reccently my indoor 8 year old cat of great health during a routine Rabies vaccine needed a teeth scrapping. The clinic vet told me that he needed it and there could be an infection in his gums. I took him to a vet and she cleaned his teeth and exstacted two of them. It was caught early before any real damage or serious infection started. When she called me after his surgery I asked why? He eats nothing but dry cat food (IAMS), eats tartar control treats and gets his teeth brushed on occassion. She asked if he had ever been tested for feline AIDS. I told her yes when he was four months old. I have three cats all three have been tested for lukemia and AIDS. She told me that bad teeth early on in a cat is a symptom of AIDS. I can't understand why he would have it now? He has never been sick in the past. She says that the first test could come back with a false negitive if he was a sick kitten which he was. Could he survive 8 yrs. without symptoms?
I have a serious health question regarding a Manx cat? This cats name is Stubors. She is kind of young about 3 years old and she began to develop some kind of cold symptoms. We thought it would go away but she's had it for awhile now. Her symptoms are: sneezing runny nose bad odor (saliva, "bugers") white one eye is shut from some white mucus of some sort appetite ok wont drink water but milk not alot of energy Can someone help me out? We cant afford to take to doc. Can I give her some kind of human meds? there is no vet avaliable in the town that I'm living
Do you think my cat has asthma? My cat has been wheezing and breathing strangely over the past few weeks and acting lethargic. She's been to the vet several times but they didn't see anything wrong with her. They gave her some medicine for depression but that doesn't seem to have helped much with her breathing. She is 5 3/4 years old and otherwise in a good health. These symptoms appeared only a few weeks ago. Does anyone know what might be wrong with her?...experts only -sources would be a plus. Thanks in advance!
has anyone in So Ariz noticed their cat losing weight fast and not eating-i'm about to lose one -symptoms? I've been feeding 11 cats and 4 dogs a combo of wet/dry food from Frys and WalMart for 5 yrs; have found 3 cats in the desert and now have 2 more very lethargic, losing weight very rapidly, no eatingor drinking and can barely walk. Onset was very fast-playing one day and legs were unable to support them the next. These cats are not all from the same family-they were rescued-but I've never had a problem with their individual health. Don't want to accuse anyone, but, I spend an average of 150.00 per month on pet food and don't want to continue buying a product that may kill them! any info...PLEASE!! Thanks...Sharon
Is anyone else's cat having problems with Nutro Max Cat wet food? I took my cat to the vet for a check up today, and because she's having some digestive issues. While I was there, the vet was letting everyone know that Nutro was recalling their dry food because of "production errors". I had just bought wet food Saturday morning and all the shelves were stocked with Nutro - wet and dry food. Isn't that deplorable? There was no recall notice at the store, but the recall was issued May 11, 2009. The vet is treating my cat's symptoms, but now I wonder if Nutro's wet food is the problem. My cats eat Nutro wet food, but they eat Royal Canin dry food. Do you feed your cats Nutro wet food, and have you noticed any changes with your cat's digestive health? P.S.: Correction - the dry food recall was May 21, not 11.
how fast can animals display symptoms of rabies? my cat is acting strange since she fought with a stray cat. she fought with the cat like an hour or two ago and the stray cat is still at the door making noise. now i notice my cat is more feisty, she stratched at me a little and kinda get mad at the noises of the other cat. is this normal? should I be worried if she has rabbies. she isnt bleeding or have deep bite marks. Should i be worry about my health. Thanks everyone
Is there a reason why some one would respond to my question about my cat with such a negative attitude? I was negligent in reporting in my answer that my vet said, "I don't think it is a problem or anything serious." I was insulted by the last answer that implied that I was negligent in the health care of my cat. I understand how that could be misconstrued. I do not understand why some one would be so focused on hurting the feelings of someone who cares enough about a cat to ask a serious question in an open forum. My vet did not have a satisfactory answer for me over the past few years of this symptom and I needed help. This seemed like a good venue for information. I was looking for some way to respond to the last responder and let it be known that I do properly care for and love my cat and have always provided responsible health care on a regular basis for all of my cats. Is there a way to respond to this person with the above answer to my question regarding the raised black spots on my cat's gum line which have been multiplying for about two years? TY 2 those who help
URGENT! Please help with my cats health? Read on...? My cat is a 5 yr old female. She has many problematic symptoms and I have taken her to different vets numerous times, without any relief. I've been told she had an ear infection, a yeast infection, ear mites, leukemia (which was ruled out), intestinal problems, and digestive problems. Each time I treated her with what was prescribed. She still has many symptoms such as: watery eyes dark spots in her ears gooey substance in ears appears to be what looks like scabs on her chin sleeping more than usual not as friendly; irritable; sad vomiting hair loss rubbing sides of her face against things have found stool other than inside litter box (unusual for her) If any one can please help me in finding possible diagnoses, treatments, causes, information, products, etc... She is my best buddy, I love her, and I hate to see her like this because it is my responsibility to take good care of her. Thank you
need help with my pet cats health/going into heat? please help !! my female cat keeps going into heat almost every week for a few days. my cat has a medical condition that prevents me from getting it treated which would usually prevent this. I cannot afford the hormone injections from the vet which apparently help and wondered if anyone out their had advice for me ie. What triggers it in the first place and is there anything i can do to reduce the chances of her starting at all or as frequently? once shes yelping and its underway can i do anything to speed the process up therefore not lasting so long As my cat seems in genuine distress when at its peek is there anything i can do to comfort her/alleviate her symptoms will stroking her make it worse? does things like catnip trigger it or help it. any advice other than drugs or surgery is the main help i'm looking for. Thanks yahoo community for your help
One of my cats vomited up a piece of plastic. I have 2 cats and I don't know which one ate this? They both seem fine otherwise. Should I take them to the vet anyway or should I keep an eye on them for any health problems? Also - Could a piece of plastic, such as a small peice of tape, stay inside the body without the cat showing any symptoms or would they have some obvious signs of trouble?
Are these allergy symptoms normal? I've been forced to live with a cat for the last month or so and probably will have it for a long time now. I always knew I was allergic to cats. The inner region of my ears get extremely itchy. Is that normal? My nose gets congested, and my eyes get watery and itchy. Are there any long term health risks of living with a cat that you are allergic to? I've never heard of itchy ears as a symptom before. That concerns me. Is there any hope of my allergies going away?
What happens if a cat eat bad (old) food? I threw away 2-week-old small piece of meat in my trash can and unfortunately one of my three cats found it and went through my trash and ate it. I cannot tell which one ate it but i am worried for their health since the meat was old. Is there anything I should expect to see from the one that ate it? Will there be symptoms? Can this lead to something bad? Please hep...and serious answers only. Thank you.
A stray cat scratched me will I get rabies? I read all the rabies questions on yahoo answers already but i'm still worried about recieving rabies because I saw the cat lick it's paw and I figured that the claws would get soaked in it's salvia, which carried the virus. It doesn't have foam in the mouth and wasn't vicious ( it clawed me because i tried to take back the food i gave it) I'm constantly feeding it so it would stay so I can observe it for rabies symptoms My health care insurance expired the day I recieved the scratch also Does anyone know how much a rabies shot is?
What are signs of pet grief? My sister just had to put her dog down on Friday. It was a 13 year old lab with many health problems. Since then her cat has been very needy and seeking constant attention. Is she imagining it or is her cat displaying symptoms of grief?

My roommate's cat is acting very strange, do we have to worry about rabies? My roommate just got a cat, and he's been a little vague on the details. When he first brought the cat to the apartment about 2 weeks ago, it was very timid around everyone but him. The past 2-3 days, however, the cat has been behaving very strangely. It walks up to me and my other roommates like a cat normally looking for attention does. when we reach to pet him, he lets us for a short while, then either hisses or tries to scratch us, then runs away. The cat hasn't been drinking much water the last few days either. I know that several symptoms in humans can be psychosomatic, and that if the cat only started showing symptoms now, it's unlikely that any of us could be symptomatic. Still, it's enough to bother me. Should I convince my roommate to get the cat tested? And since it's been 2 weeks since he brought the cat to the apartment, should I do anything for my own health? Edit: The cat has scratched my roommate (its owner) and drew blood. I forget to mention that earlier. Does that increase any kind of risk?
What's causing my cat's gum lesions? Tooth abscesses or oral cancer? Hello everyone, In advance, I'd like to thank you for reading this thread. Whether you are a veterinarian, vet tech, or plain old animal lover like me, I graciously appreciate any thoughts, feedback, or advice you can offer regarding my cat's recent health dilemma. My cat, Melody, is a six-year-old female orange tabby. Two weeks ago, she presented with unusual gagging and pawing at the mouth, occurring several times throughout the day for a total of two days. She was eating and drinking fine during this time. An upper respiratory infection soon followed along with refusal to eat or drink for two days. On day three, we took her to see a veterinarian to make sure the situation didn’t get out of hand. The vet said she may have Feline Calicivirus or Rhinotracheitis, which cause recurring respiratiory infections, and we thought that was the culprit (e.g., the onset of the cold may have given her a scratchy/sore throat, causing the pawing and gagging behaviors). The other culprit suspected was dental disease. During the exam, the vet diagnosed Grade IV-V dental disease, and noted that Melody would need to have a full mouth exam, cleaning, and possible tooth extractions. For the time being, the vet put her on a liquid antibiotic (Clavamox) taken twice a day, administered an appetite stimulant, and gave an oral gel supplement (L-Lysine). Melody was just beginning to eat as we got home that night. Her voracious appetite returned over the next few days, much to my pleasure, and after a week, the cold was in remission! And now she’s begun the pawing at the mouth/gagging once again, with occasional drooling. She is having some trouble eating, but does eventually eat wet food nonetheless. Knowing that her symptoms are not cold-related, I now suspect that dental disease is the problem. I managed to take a few pictures of her mouth when she was eating and playing for a closer look, and found two cyst-like lesions on her bottom two canine teeth, left and right sides. Here are some pictures for your review: 1) http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/7372/46368822.jpg 2) http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/8217/16147540.jpg 3) http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9180/52037016.jpg 4) http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/5527/30864271.jpg My questions: 1) Might these lesions be related to the Clavamox antibiotic (e.g., an allergic reaction to penicillin/clavulanate)? I didn’t notice the lesions at all before administering the antibiotic, nor did the vet, but they may have still been there. 2) Does this look like some sort of pyoderma/bacterial gum infection? Possibly tooth abscesses? If so, why didn't the antibiotic take care of it? 3) One I’m especially worried about - might this be oral squamous cell carcinoma or a form of feline oral cancer? I know that cancer diagnosis can only be determined after performing a biopsy, but based on their shape, size, color, and appearance in general, do you think the lesions are benign or malignant? These questions are intended only for information gathering. Of course I will bring her in to see the veterinarian as soon as possible, but right now, we are swamped with an awful blizzard (several feet of snow), and local vets aren’t even in the office. I will look into emergency vet hospitals if I can’t get an appointment soon, but I’m once again grateful for your feedback in the interim. Thank you so much! The Clavamox antibiotic was administered for 10 days in total.
Why has my cat started dribbling? He does have a spot on his mouth too.? I have 2 cats, and it is the neutered male cat who has the problem. He is about 2 years old, and a long haired black and white cat, of no particular breed. This morning he woke me up by sitting on my chest and purring, as he often does, and as I awoke I noticed that the duvet was wet on the area below his mouth. Later I laughingly told my husband that he had learned a new trick - dribbling on me to wake me up. But when I then went to pick him up to give him a hug I noticed the fur around his mouth, down his chest, and on his front paws was very wet. After a little research online I learnt that a problem with his teeth might be causing the dribbling, but when we tried to look in his mouth they seemed to be ok. Plus, he doesn't seem to have bad breath which I know is another indicator of dental problems. A couple of hours later I noticed that thick saliva was hanging down from his mouth after he had been asleep, but as he woke up a bit more he groomed himself and removed it. My husband and I were out for a few hours this evening and when we returned we checked him over, and he still seemed a bit wet around his mouth, plus I noticed a 'spot' in the centre of his bottom lip, just underneath the opening to his mouth. It is right in the centre, and is skin coloured, though slightly more pink around the edge, and looks like it might have some pus inside. After seeing that I managed to get his mouth open a bit more, and everything looks okay inside, but of course I'm not a vet so don't really know what I'm looking for. He's still eating normally (he has a diet of dry complete cat food with the odd tidbit of human food such as a piece of ham) and doesn't seem to be drinking any more or less than usual. He seems quite perky in himself (apart from when we're trying to look in his mouth of course!) but it is very unusual for him to be dribbling so much, as he has never been the type of cat to do that when he purrs, as I know some cats do. Also, the appearance of this spot is a bit worrying. Obviously if he goes downhill tomorrow I will try and get a vet's appointment for Monday, but I just wondered if anyone's cat had had similar symptoms and could put my mind at rest that it's hopefully nothing too serious. We got him about a year ago after his previous owner was moving away and couldn't take him to her new place, and shortly before we got him our other male, much loved cat passed away due to suspected FIP, and he was only just coming up to 2, so it would be awful to think of another young cat being ill as well. We don't have kids, so he and our neutered female are very much our 'babies' and absolute members of the family, so if anyone can offer me any reassurance about his health I would be very grateful! Thanks.
...is this true about respiratory problems & what are some ways to avoid both cats getting eachother sick? I adopted a 9 month old kitten- a week later she had a regular sneeze start up. She will be going to the vet tomorrow. The problem is I also own a 7yr. old cat who now has both eyes running constantly, (clear fluid) but no sneezing. The 7yr. old cat has never had any previous health problems. I read up that respiratory problems include sneezing and runny eyes as some of the symptoms. My question- is this true about respiratory problems and what are some ways to avoid both cats getting each other sick?
can vacinations cause your cat to be sick? Hi ,I brought my 11 year old cat to the vet about 6 days ago.She got a rabies shot,Leukemia, and distemper vaccine. They also did a stool check which was fine.Since then she has been acting lest less. The first day she was very hyper. She started having diarrhea Yesterday about four times and threw up today and had diarrhea once so far.She is drinking water and ate alittle of her science diet food awhile ago.I have been giving her wet food called Meow mix market select with real tuna and shrimp,in the morning and a little at night. She has never gottin sick off it before.I just don't know if it's the food that is a bad batch or from the shots.I called the vet,but she has not returned my call yet.I am embarressed to say this ,but I don't have the money to bring her back to the vet unless I borrow some.I spent over a hundred dollars last week and I am not in good health myself..Which I should be going to the doctor. Please any advice on what I can do for my cat Lexi.Se has not had diarrhea since this morning .Does anyone know what causes a cat to have these symptoms? She is a long haired ,and gets hairballs. Can this cause her to have these symtoms.I am very nervous! THAnks LIsa
Should I report my neighbors for animal neglect? To whom? My neighbor has at least 10 housecats. One of them often hung out at my house. She was extremely thin, so I started feeding her (I honestly was afraid of starving). The next thing you know 5-6 cats were hanging out here for food (all are thin ). Many of them are congested with snot flying out of their noses and rattling chests. My neighbor told me a while ago that a few of her cats were on medicine for colds. It became increasingly difficult to afford food (I also have two cats of my own), and to get into my own house (2 cats started running in the house at every opportunity). My female cat ended up getting some of the same symptoms (she's better now), and my male cat has fleas (I'm treating him). I had to stop feeding the cats, but many are still begging and I feel terrible, but my cats' health was compromised. They are also left out in the cold. Last Winter I called many times after owners were in bed asking them to get their cat to prevent freezing (Michigan). Do I report? Thanks! I just looked up my local ASPCA, and I emailed them explaining the situation, and asking for further guidance. If any of you are Christians, please pray that each cat will get a good, loving home, and will be healthy and happy.
Would like opinion on health issue? I've been getting allergy issues, started out small, seems to happen only at my house, not my gf's, we both have a cat and a dog, so I'm not sure the difference. Now, it has escalated to severe headaches in localized areas, pressure behind my right eye, sinus infections, the works. I also seem to get extremely fatigued along with the other symptoms. Anyone have more insight than just allergies?
What is wrong with my cat? Digestive and skin inflammation? Obviously, something is wrong with my cat, but the vet tells me that they don't know what it is. I have exhausted my financial resources, and the next visit to the vet may be the last as I am considering putting her to sleep. Please help! Lifestages: Kitten and Lifestages: Adult cat? Lifestages: Kitten As we know kittens are lively bundles of fun and seem to have endless energy reserves - in fact they need 2-3 times more energy per kilo of bodyweight than adult cats! That means they need a quality diet to provide all the nutrients they need for healthy development as well as the energy to play all day. The nutrition centre kitten diets are formulated especially for this exciting time of life: •High quality ingredients mean optimum digestibility to ensure all the goodness is absorbed and less wasted. •Kitten friendly bite-sized kibbles for their little jaws and tummies. •High protein levels ensure optimum growth and calorie intake for energy. •Calcium and phosphorous to build strong bones. •Antioxidants to support a developing immune system. If you want to change your kitten’s diet to a nutrition centre food, do so gradually over a period of a few days, mixing increasing proportions of the new food into the old. This will ease the transition on your kitten’s sensitive digestion system. Ensure you feed the correct daily allowance and do not overfeed. Kittens will eat little but often, so leaving their allowance out for them to graze is ideal. Your kitten will reach maturity from 12 months and this is the time to move from a kitten diet to adult. Again, it is sensible to do this over a few days. Lifestages: Adult Cats like to show us who’s boss by turning their noses up at certain foods and having favourites, but they do not require the variety that we do in our diet, so it is advisable to stick to one food if that’s what they like! We recommend an Adult Complete cat food. As cats like to pick at their food and take their time, measure out their daily allowance and leave their bowl out for them to graze throughout the day (not advisable with wet diets that may spoil). Nutrition centre foods are specially formulated to support this prime time in your cat’s life: •Healthy skin and coat •A strong immune system •Dental health •Digestive health •Healthy urinary tract Within the nutrition centre range there are a number of specialist diets, so to help you select the right one, is your cat… Overweight? Obesity is on the increase with overfeeding and lack of exercise being the main contributing factors. Put simply, if your cat is eating more calories than it needs then the excess is deposited as fat. If your cat is more inclined to curl up and snooze than be active, or if your cat is an indoor cat and therefore exercise is limited, it is advisable to select a Light Complete food, or a special Indoor cat food. Limiting the calorie intake and incorporating L-carnitine to increase the rate at which fat is burnt up, these foods can help weight loss and optimise body condition. To combat obesity be strict with your cat’s food, feeding only their daily allowance, however much they try to twist you round their paw! Physical symptoms of an overweight cat include: -It maybe difficult to feel there ribs -Stomach may hang low -the hips may not be visible -the back maybecome broader Pregnant? Throughout a pregnancy queens require more calories than their usual diet. To provide enough energy for her and her growing kittens during this time a Kitten Complete food is ideal to provide the additional protein supply. Queens will begin to gain weight from the second week of pregnancy and in the later stages of pregnancy you should be feeding your cat up to 25% more than usual, as and when she miaows for it. She will need the extra strength from a kitten diet right up until they are weaned but keep an eye on her weight gain to ensure it does not become excessive.
Should I trust the vet with her diagnosis of my cat? What does this sound like to you? I suspect renal failure? My 15 year old indoor cat Pookie's health has seemed to decline over the last year with lack of grooming, looking frail, and increased thirst. Previously the vet has minimized these symptoms by saying her issues are from aging but otherwise "Pookie was healthy". I put her in the hospital Saturday after she had diarrhea, vomiting (saliva) , and extreme weakness. I thought she was dying. The vet said she thinks it's a stomach issue. They gave her an antibiotic shot, dewormer and fluids. Vet said Pookie's kidney values were slightly elevated to a 5, but that didn't indicate failure.Everything else in the bloodwork was normal. Now that she's home she seems so weak and just sleeps, but is walking around a little and eating a little. I'm thinking this could be renal failure since Pookie had stones removed several years ago and the thirst, loss of weight, and lack of grooming happening before the recent vomiting and diarrhea. The vet wants to see if her stomach treatment works, and then do x-rays and ultra sounds on Pookie's belly. I'm wondering if this treatment the vet is suggesting is just a money pit unrelated to what's really going on here. Sorry for the long post. I just want to do what's best for Pookie. I hate to be shoving dewormer down her throat and subjecting her to stomach scopes when she's actually got a kidney issue. Any tips appreciated.
Update on Sick Cat and New Symptom? Hello all who gave prayers for my 19yr old cat to get well. She's back to health and normal save for one little thing....She wont make much of a bellow movement. She's had 3 lbs. of liver and 18 lbs. of boiled ground turkey since she started getting better (over a month and a half) and she's only made 9 BM's; less then a half finger in length. She's healthy otherwise but that can't be good for her. What's wrong with her?
Sick finches - 2 dead and 1 sick in a month? I bought a pair of finches about a month ago...one died about 1 week later and the next died about 2 weeks after that. After the first one died, I bought another one (who is still living). The only symptom that they showed was very loose stools. I went to the store I bought them at and all the birds look very bad...sores, missing feather etc. Any idea of what this is? and should I be worried for my dog and cats health?
My cat's nose is normally brick red. Last night it was pale for several hours; this morning it was fine. ??? He's a male gray tiger/Russian Blue rescue cat, 9 years old (with me 7 years), excellent health, indoors only. He showed no change in appetite, water usage, litter box habits (or the contents of it!) or attitude. Coat, eyes, and temperature were fine. It was just this sudden change of his nose leather from dark brick to pale pink. A friend who has five cats said today that two of hers also get pale noses occasionally, and like me, she hasn't noticed any accompanying signs or symptoms. Does this indicate that the cat(s) should be checked? Or, if this "just happens sometimes," does anyone know why?
Cat Allergy? I took in a friend's cat (Morris) recently; we have two other cats. Morris came to us with fleas and we noticed right away that his bottom lip was swelling and he had some pretty severe swelling and bumps on his neck. We immediately took care of the flea problem and saw immediate improvement. It's been 3 months now and his lip is STILL swollen and I'm starting to find bumps on his neck again. No scabs or crusties, but hard knobby bumps. He's eating OK and acting fine so I'm not really worried about his actual health. However, he can't be feeling really good and it's starting to worry me. What are some typical cat allergies that I could be looking for? I use Frontline Plus for fleas, is there something better I should be using? I have not noticed any fleas or symptoms with my other cats, so I didn't think that was it; is it possible that is still the problem? I would appreciate any advice that I can try before I have to take him to the vet. Thanks! I've talked with the friend I got Morris from. She has had this problem as well. It went away when she moved into a new house and stayed gone for almost a year. Now it's back. She says the vet told her it was an allergy, but they never found out to what. I have treated all the cats with Frontline Plus. I have another cat with a typical flea allergy so I keep them all flea-free. The vet seemed pretty sure it wasn't a food allergy. So I was wondering what other things cats can be allergic to? Are they sensitive to dust or pollen like some humans?
Ways to cope with Major Depressive Disorder? I read the symptoms for Major Depressive Disorder, from this link, http://answers.yahoo.com/question/?qid=20070411151501AAZbuhh&grp_name=Men_overcoming_depression&grp_spid=1601040823&grp_cat=/Health___Wellness/Support/Diseases_and_Conditions/Mental_Health_Disorders/Mood_Disorders/Depressive_Disorders&grp_user=0 , and I have all of the normal symptoms and some of the severe symptoms as well. I am currently unemployed and the bills are stacking up, I have no health insurance and everyday is a struggle to try and look for a job, does anyone have any suggestions for help that for the moment doesnt involve professional health care? Any thoughts, suggestions or comments would be GREATLY appreciated.
Please help. Cat might be sick?? I think there might be something wrong with one of my cats. I've noticed a clear discharge on places where my cats usually sit. It is not urine. It doesn't have much of an odor and seems to be clear. The probalem is that I have three cats and I am not sure which one it is coming from, or where the discharge is coming from. I have had cats my whole life and have never encountered a problem like this before. I have also had these cats for years with no major health issues. Any advice would be helpful. I love my cats very much and don't want to see one of them sick. I would take the cat to the vet, except that I don't know which one it is. Also, none of them are displaying any other unusual symptoms. Thank you for any help you may provide.
My cat is sick, and drooling alot.? Hello, I just took my cat to the vet because she is sick. The symptoms are she is lethargic, not eating and drooling ALOT, and licking her mouth. The Vet ran bloodwork and said her stats looked good. He thinks its just a irritateed GI track but she seems awfully sick for that. She isnt vomimting but hasnt eaten much but will drink a lil bit of water. They gave me some syrup medication to help her stomach. Does this sound right? She is 4yrs old female and spayed. No previous health problems. =(

Worried about rabies with my cat .. ? Hi all, Our cat Tommy was lost from us for two years he just came back to us three weeks ago. When he came back he had a wound on his leg possibly a cat bite. He had watery eyes and looked very sick. I took him to the vet the vet said that he's infected with the feline aids virus (fiv) and has a kidney failure. After a series of injections and treating with interferon alpha my cat is now in very good health except that he's sometimes sneezing with his mucus flying all over the room i'm confining him in a room since we have another female cat and I don't want her to catch the fiv virus. The vet prescribed some pills for the sneezing he's not sneezing by now. I got bitten by Tommy 8 days ago just above the ankle it was a slight bite that didn't cause any bleeding. He was just lying down playing and bit me. I took my rabies vaccinations 5 days after the bite isn't that late ? After 4 days from the bite I had flu symptoms including coughing, a sore throat, and a runny nose. On the night of the bite I felt some tingling on the site of the bite I had the bite site washed and covered it with a plaster. The scary question now is : could I be infected with rabies =\ I took a tetanus shot on the same day of the bite since the clinic close to me didn't have rabies post exposure shots. Since the day of the bite Tommy was very normal he wasn't showing any symptoms except being too affectionate and friendly following me everywhere in the room he wasn't like that when he came back to us. If he doesn't show any symptoms after 10 days does this mean that I'm safe ?? I need someone to calm me down lol i'm very paranoid.
What are some common causes of green vomit in felines? What are some common causes of green vomit in felines? I recently adopted an 11 month old kitten whom has been vomiting green vomit and has a loss of appetite. She is not dehydrated and the contents of the litter box are normal. The last this this occurred, with very similar symptoms about two weeks ago, I took my kitten into the veterinarian during emergency hours and checking blood and taking x-rays they informed me that she had gastrointestinitis (stomach virus) and told me that unless she displayed significant indicators of a health issue I should not concern myself with it unless the contents of the litter box change the color of the vomit changed. About two days after taking her into the vet the symptoms went away and she returned to her normal habits. I have also heard from other cat owners that if the cat has been eating plants they may have green vomit as a result for several days afterwards. Some more details on the vomiting - it is typically not constant and generally only occurs about once a night, roughly one episode in 12 to 24 hours or longer. I have also been keeping an eye on her hydration via the basic technique that the vet showed me and I have also seen her drinking fluids when I was around and she did not have a vomiting episode after drinking the water. Also, the decreased appetite is not a major symptom or concern at this time as she is due to go into heat again and the last time she did she ate less up to the point of going into heat.
Help with cat who has IBS? At least i think she has IBS, she goes from severe diarrhea (almost water) to constipation and not pooing for 3 days. Im not feeding her anything in particular constantly because im still searching for something that will work. I only feed holistic food, and have tried wellness core, go natural, oven baked, as well as some other store brand holistics. Only premium though. I have no problem forking out money for my cat's nutrition. Now for some backround, I have had her for 3 months, shes a rescue, just under 2 years old, and a purebred extreme faced persian. Other than the diarrhea/constipation spells she is perfect, shiny, low shedding coat, bright eyes, very active, pees regularily. Some other symptoms i have noticed is her stool is very smelly, her breath stinks and shes often hungry meowing for food. She was seen by a vet through the adoption process, spayed, and had a general check and all shots. The reason i ask about this is i am wondering if there are any supplements i can include in her diet or a specific food that will help, or any ingredients in food that i should be looking for. Now for the biggest problem: canned food is out of the question, oddly enough she will NOT eat it, no matter what kind, not even real chicken or tuna. She will not touch any wet food or even moist treats. Dry kibble is the only thing she will eat. Please only reply if you have knowledge on this subject or have first hand experience. Do not tell me im a bad pet owner for not immediatly seeking a vet, my cat is fine and in good health other than this. Plus i cannot get into the vet for at least another week.
My 8 year old Siamese cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure: his severe diarrhea wont stop please HELP? I took my beloved cat to the vet three days ago after he had a serious bout with vomiting white foam and clear fluid. I was horrified to discover he has the first stages of Kidney failure. After the massive pet food recall scandal, we lost his sister last summer. Now Elvis is presenting similar symptoms. The vet gave him oral pastes to line his stomach. And Neosol drops (Neomycin sulfate) 0.75 mg twice daily. Today when i called the vet she told me to increase the neosol to three times a day, and take his food away for 24 hours. She sent us home with Medi-Cal reduced protein formula. And recommended tomorrow switching him to a sensitivity diet if the diarrhea persists. The bloodwork revealed: UREA - 19.4 CREA 323 He was given 200cc Sub Q fluids. I am fearful he is still losing fluids and at terrible risk for dehydration. Also if we have to switch foods the sensitivity diets are not the best for his kidneys. Is there anything at all I can do for my cat to help him regain his health

Worried about this cat? My elderly neighbour's cat hasnt eaten or drank anything for 2 days and is very lethargic. The cat is female, 5 years old and generally in excallent health. She is an indoor / outdoor cat. I have pleaded with him to let me take it to the vet but he's waiting to see if she will pick up. Its not my cat so I cant steal it and take it to a vet. I'm terrified she may have eaten a poisoned rat or mouse or something like slug pellets and is suffering from poisoning. Do you know what the symptoms would be if this had happened. Is there any other reason a cat would be like this? She has been spayed and has no vomitind, diarhorrea or weeping eyes thought she just inst herself.
Blood in cat urine...vet treating as cystitis...please help? Been online and have read a TON but remain worried and would like anyones input that may have some advice or words of encouragement. Female 8 year old cat initially treated with Amoxicillin 1x day & 1steriod injection @ vet visit. Now we are treating with Keflex(sp) 2x daily & one steriod injection when took to vet- became VERY lethargic that night. Since then, no behavioral changes save frequent urination with blood. No meowing with urination. Just moved to a new house about a month ago. Vet(very unimpressed with our signs/symptoms)thinks it is stress induced- no obstructions. Looking to treat next with Amytriptaline-Elavil?(sp) if not fixed with antibiotics. No previous health concerns with this or my other cat. If you have ANY information on this, it would be greatly appreciated...How common is this with pet owners? How long is treatment typically? Should I demand a bloodwork up from the vet? Be more aggressive? Thank you for any help, AMY-nervous pet owner & gris gris-sick cat
Early kidney stone symptoms? I would prefer no guesses, *please*. Please only answer if you are in the health profession or have first-hand knowledged! I had a huge kidney stone dissolved by lithotripsy in early April. For a few weeks prior to the horrific, debilitating pain that came to me as though I had been hit by a huge truck with a gnawing maw, I had had menstrual type cramps, but all around my midriff. Lately I've been having some pains in both the left side and right side of my body, about even with my kidneys, but in the side, not back. Here are my questions: 1. Would the CAT scan/X-rays they took 1 1/2 months ago have shown all the stones or just the one that caused the problem and 2) am I having symptoms of kidney stones again? Thanks much. Eek. Discovered a typo, and I hate them. "Knowledge," not "knowledged". Good grief, people, I don't need websites or quotes from websites - my question is quite specific, *especially* about the Xray/CAT scan issue! Come on!
Why is my cat suddenly very unsettled/distressed/crazy? My usually calm, NEUTERED 2 yr. old male cat has suddenly lost his mind. He paces around and meows loudly (never meowed much at all before.) He is suddenly very unsettled and edgy. He has not been tramatized by anyone or anything. He has food, water, clean litter box, everything he normally has and was happy with. He is an indoor cat, never been outside in his life. He has toys and is played with. Yet, he is walking around with his tail slapping side to side like he is highly agitated and he is meowing nonstop. It is keeping my roommates awake... He was neutered around 3 months old before ANY sexual maturation started taking place. His health is fine, he isn't displaying any other symptoms/issues. He simply will NOT calm down!
Possible problems in senior cat w distended belly? I have a male cat that is going to be 16 yrs old next month. I've had him my entire life, and he's lived indoors his entire life. A few weeks ago, he got very lethargic and weak, and we assumed that his time had come (because of his age). Well, in a couple days, he was fine. Then, we noticed his appitite had increased. When he was sick, we gave him some wet food since he wasnt eating dry food. In his life he never had wet food, and has always been in excellent health. Over the weeks we noticed him getting fatter, which we assumed was to change of diet. But, not so sure about that anymore since it was so sudden. His stomach is swollen in the middle section (not including his chest) and is hard. He also seems to have issues jumping, and his pesonality has become a lot more grumpy. He very recently started vomitting. And he hasnt been using the litter box, which I'm not sure if thats related to whatever is wrong with him medically, or just because it hurts. He doesnt exhibit any noticable signs of pain. I've already tested his blood sugar and it was on the lower end in the perfect range, so I know its not diabetes. I know I should take him to a vet, but I just dont have the money for them to run all the tests they would do for something that they may not even treat because of his age. And I also realize it could be because of his age he has this issue. But, I would just like to have an idea of what could be wrong. If it could be treated (if so I can TRY to come up with the money to bring him to the vet), or if it's something that I should just have him put down for, instead of suffering (which is the heart breaking choice, since I was raised with him. I got him when I was 5...) So, thanks or reading this. There really arent any other symptoms I can go off of. Also, I dont think it's FIP. I have 3 other cats, all inside, and none of them are showing any symptoms of anything. So, I dont believe it's anything contagious. Plus, he hasnt had to many of the symptoms. Thank you for reading this and any input you can offer. =] I am pretty sure its not cancer. Symptoms started a few weeks ago, and up until then, he was normal. Attitude and health wise. Besides that, there are no tumors. I've checked, and I noticed none before the swelling either. Which also rules out a UTI in him. And I had a cat w cancer a while back. She was too old to treat. I just noticed that he has been running to the litter box alot more today then usual, and seems to be throwing up alot more. The first time he had food in his stomach, but the second time it was more like dry heaving. So, I'm thinking maybe its intestinal or stomach related? But i dont know if it could be part of something bigger or not. Or he is just old and his body is shutting down. I know cats have the ability to mask illness for as long as possible. I'm pretty positive that if its anything serious I'll get the recommendation to put him down since indoor cats on average only live 15-17 years. But I want hope that its an easy to fix thing so he can live Ok, last important detail. He has gained an appitite. Not unusally more, but more so. His appitite has been healthy all along. Actually, his stomach is stronger now. He always had a sesitive stomach to foods w too much oils in them (which is why he never had any wet food), but he is stomaching all that better. He seems lazier then normal, but I'm assuming that goes along w the tummy issue. I know, this is absolutely puzzeling. I wish I had more symptoms to go off of, (well, actually no, I dont...) but I am really left with nothing. I've always been good at pin pointing whats wrong w my pets. I'm going to take his blood sugar again today after he eats, and see what its at.
Pregnancy & Cat Litter? I have been in the same room a couple times while someone has changed the cat litter box (I don't live at the house I was at though.) I believe you can get something called Toxoplasmosis? I was wondering what is it exactly, could I have gotten it, what would the symptoms be and how it could affect my pregnancy/unborn daughter's or my health. I will bring it up to my OB on Wednesday as well! Thank you :-)
Can humans be effected by cats with feline herpes? Both of my cats have feline herpes and when their nervous systems are stressed they exhibit strong cold symptoms. Is there anyway this han effect my health?
pet symptoms? My cat has been vomiting lately and today I found worms in her vomit. They're white. about 5in long and thin and flat. Anyone know what they could be? We also have 2 dogs, a bird and 2 children in the house, I'm concerned for all their health.
What brands of milk have Casein in them? The early production of casein isolates was stimulated by their application in industrial products such as paper, glue, paint, and plastics. These applications have been replaced by petroleum-based polymers. They are widely used in the formulation of comminuted meat products, coffee whitener, processed cereal products, bakery products, and cheese analogs. Casein has been documented to break down in the stomach to produce the peptide casomorphin, an opioid that appears to act primarily as a histamine releaser [4]. Casomorphine is suspected by some sources to aggravate the symptoms of autism. A study found that children with Autism placed on a casein-free diet for eight weeks showed significant behavior improvements (Lucarelli 1995). Info above found on http://www.answers.com/topic/casein?cat=health My son had Dandy-Walker Complex and I was told that casein could be aggravating his symptoms... that's why I'm asking.

Ever had to put a pet down? I have a cat of 11 years - senior - yes, exceptionally old - no. His health hasn't been good for few months now and we've been going to the vet fairly often in the last 2 to 3 months. His symptoms were major weight loss (from 16lbs to 10lbs), peeing inappropriately and vomitting. The blood samples and ultrasound revealed some sort of liver failure (it is undersized but they don't know much more than that) and hyper-thyroidism. I've been giving him various medications which he resists or throws up. Giving him meds is stressing but so is the idea of putting him down. I worry about what this environment (physical & emotional) is doing for my 3 year old and my pregnancy. Should I put him down? Should I be there if I do or let my husband instead? FYI we recently took him off the meds when we thought we would be putting him down. He did well for about 3 days but now is back to vomitting once or twice a day.
Here are The recall sympoms, questions, and answers for any one who wants to know.? . What exactly is covered by the Menu Foods Recall and for what timeframe? The recall is limited to “cuts and gravy” style pet food in cans and foil pouches produced on specific dates and times between December 3, 2006, and March 6, 2007 in two of Menu’s plants. The recall affects 42 brands of cat food and 53 brands of dog food. In order to determine whether cat and dog food that your pet consumed is subject to recall, you should refer to the list of brand names on this website. 2. What should I do if I think my pet may have consumed the recalled product? If your pet is exhibiting any signs of kidney failure please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Symptoms include loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, disorientation and changes in water consumption and urination. If you suspect that you have fed the recalled pet food to your cat or dog, save any remaining pet food and the can or pouch. Open cans or pouches may be double-bagged in sealable plastic and kept in the freezer. 3. Who is going to pay my vet bills for sickness and death? If Menu Foods product is the cause of sickness or death, Menu Foods will take responsibility. Menu has engaged a professional firm to manage your concerns and is currently contacting concerned pet owners who have reached our call center. Specific direction will be received from these individuals. Please keep copies of all your vet records and receipts for pet food purchases as well as vet bills. 4. What do I do if I have pet food that has been recalled? Please return it to the retailer for a refund. 5. Will I be reimbursed for the food that I return to the retailer even if my pet did not get sick? Yes, if it is a valid product that is subject to the recall. 6. How do I know if the food I bought has been recalled? The information is contained on this website. Not all date codes are subject to recall so please fully check the information on your can or pouch. The information on the website is organized by cat or dog then by brand and description. None of the traditional “loaf” style products are subject to this recall. 7. I can’t get through to the 1-866 numbers. What is going on? We apologize for the delay in answering every call; we were simply overwhelmed by the volume of calls. Menu has retained a series of interconnected call centers throughout North America. Even with many regional centers running simultaneously we have not been able to answer every call. As we announced in a press release on March 19, 2007, we have taken steps to significantly upgrade our call centers to handle the volume and we have added this Frequently Asked Questions (“FAQ”) section to our website to provide more information. 8. I feed my pet dry food. Is dry pet food safe? Menu Foods only manufactures wet pet food in cans and foil pouches. Dry pet food is not part of the Menu Foods recall. 9. I’m just not sure if my dog or cat had any of the food that is being recalled. They act fine and don’t appear to have any symptoms. Should I be worried? As always, remain alert for any changes in your pet’s health. 10. Are there other ways my pet might get sick and show similar symptoms? Yes – antifreeze ingestion, certain rodenticides and some medications. Certain lilies have been shown to cause kidney failure if consumed by cats. Grapes have been reported to cause kidney failure in dogs and may affect cats. Physical damage from trauma and cancerous conditions can also cause kidney damage. 11. Has Menu Foods begun contacting consumers about claims? The professional team hired by Menu began contacting consumers on Thursday March 23, 2007. This team worked through the weekend in an effort to get to as many people as possible. In order to assist in our efforts to contact these concerned pet owners as quickly as possible we ask that those who have already reached us to refrain from repeat calls. 12. Is there a time that it is easiest to get through to the 1-866 number? The best time to get through to a representative is between 4pm and 11pm EST when the call volume is at its lowest point in the day. I know its not a question, but I felt nice enough to give up 15pionts for giving all the information you guys wanted. Please appreciate it. Not everyone is as nice as me. If you need the lists, click an my image and go in my profile. Go under "questions asked" , and you will find the rest of the information, one for dogs, and one for cats.
What are the negative effects of prolonged statin usage? My doctor prescribed LIPTOR 10mg dose about 2 years ago for my then total cholesterol of 250mg/dl. Since the last 6 months I have been in ill-health with these symptoms: - mild fever in the evenings - loss of appetite - very low energy levels - easily exhausted - occasional gastritis - overall not able to motivate myself to "rise and shine" and feeling miserable. My present cholesterol is around 160 - 180 mg/dl. I have been tested for almost all diseases/conditions under the sun including Diabetes,AIDs,TB,Cancer,Cardiac disorders, thyroid-kidney-liver-pancreas-etc etc malfuctions, and my body and brain has been put thru several CAT and MRIs: net result = "you are OK - nothing wrong with you". Could it be that my statin usage is responsible? (my cardiologist says NO) Or are my doctors missing something else? PLEASE HELP - I NEED IT
Why do people with anxiety/panic attacks NOT think thats the problem? ok, so i have been having all the symptoms of panic attacks, and every one of the 4 doctors i've seen came to the same conclusion...anxiety disorder, panic attacks... they did cat scans, holtor monitor, ekg, thyroid tests and ultrasounds, and multiple blood tests NOTHING IS WRONG WITH ME BUT THIS PANIC THING!!! how come i feel like there is something major wrong with me... this jsut came out of no where...with no reason....i keep feeling like now im turning into a hypochondriac... every ache and pain i think is something serious... my leg hurt for the last 2 days, i keep telling myself its a blood clot....i had a 2 day headache, i though was a brain turmor... i went from perfectly normal to a mental health freak....is this normal for panic things??? i have this....thing, its like im in this defense mode, im always waiting for a panic attack to happen....and now its like im expecting it to happen unless im really busy... is being emotional part of it?
cat hides in closet? I have a male Maine Coon, almost 5 years old (have had him for 4 years). He was at the vet last week and is in fine health and also received a new rabies vaccination. I was unable to find him tonight and just found out that he was sleeping on a towel in my closet. I have looked on the Web to see what this might be, but many of the answers relate to a pregnant cat or a new cat in the house or having just moved to a new house- none of which are is the case. He seems ok otherwise but never saw him do this before, not since I first got him and he hid in the closet which I took as being normal due to him being in a new home. Can this be a symptom of something? thank you Paul
sick cat? allegeries? my cats have been getting sick. and two of them have gotten better before i could take them to the vet. its like insane sneezing and drooling and open mouthed breathing.. and then before the vet opens they are perfectly healthy again. what could be causing it.. i took the two that cured seemingly in hours to the vet the next day. and they got clean bills of health. but now ive got two more with the same exact symptoms. does anyone know what is causing it> i do give them wild catnip that grows in the yard. and the father of the kittens had been diagonsed with a dandelion allegery.. okay. i forgot to add it could be one of two things im thinking ive removed them both from where she is and she seems to be getting better. we got one of those instant water dishes. and the first cat got sick the day after we got it. so it could be the catnip from the yard or the water dish. . i just hope she just doesnt die on me untill her vet openes.(three more hours)
can a human get worms from a cat by letting the cat lick them? i have 4 cats. the oldest is just about a year and the 3 other ones are brothers & sister and are all about 7 months. the younger ones are very lovable and like to lick me... i found no harm in this so i let them. (i know that was stupid of me) the cats do have fleas and im working on getting rid of them (saving up money to buy the advantage;already have the bombs.) just yesterday i found about a 1/4 inch worm (not sure what kind because before i could "inspect" it, it went back into my cats butt. i gave all 4 cats a liquid wormer for roundworms but didnt find anything in the litter pan and all the cats just went to sleep after giving them the 1/4 tsp dosage. im very concerned for my health,as well as my husbands and my cats. can anyone tell me if humans can get the worms too? and if so is there any statistics? is it rare or common?what are the symptoms of an infected human with worms? please help im scared. thanks so much any advice is highly appreciated!
Does anyone have a cat with asthma? My cat has experienced extreme weight loss, fatigue and coughing like he has a hairball and nothing comes up. I took him to the vet and we couldn't find out what it could be because I couldn't afford all the tests that he needed to have. I don't have a health history because I just adopted him in March for my children. He is already neutered, declawed and was told he was UTD on his shots. I am hoping it is something that can be managed like asthma. He has all the symptoms and I am just trying to find out what it could be without paying for all the tests at the vet. I spent $127.00 on Monday and that was just for antibiotics, hairball medicine and prescription cat food to make him gain weight. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks :)
Cat is getting diarrhea and is extra demanding for attention.? I have a year old male cat and a 3 year old female. One of them has been having problems lately, and we haven't been able to figure them out. These are the symptoms of the past month: 1) The Male: Repeated peeing on our bed, which seems to have stopped once we started giving him more attention and changed their litter to a clay-based one. 2) Unknown: Diarrhea is being found every day in the box, along side solid poops. So one of them is okay, one's not. 3) Male: He's always been needy, but he's even more so. For the past week he's been cuddling with me on the couch; I love it, but this is so not the cat I've had for the past year. He hasn't done this since we first got him and he was sick, leading me to believe the diarrhea is his. My husband doesn't want to take him to the vet because I just took him in about a month ago and received a clean bill of health. Does anyone have any ideas other than "TAKE HIM IN?" (But if you think I should, I can at least use you all to justify the vet costs!) I always laugh at footnotes like these but I'm going to put one in anyway: My husband doesn't want to completely not take the cat in, vets are just really expensive and the number of "negative" tests we've gotten from taking in the cats when they act funny is really financially painful for us. He's an extremely good "daddy" to the kitties, he's just a bit hesitant to spend more money in this economy, ya know?
Animals to be treated better than or as good as humans? How many of you have heard of people who treat their dogs/cats/etc. better than their human friends? Is this good or bad? I'm always told I need to take all of my animals to the vet. Unfortunately, I have 13 guinea pigs, a cat, a dog, and a rabbit... they are all healthy, adorable and well taken care of. It is $70 just to take them in... much less cure them of any unknown symptoms. Am I one of those awful animal abusers - or is it okay just to take care of my animals and love them until they die? Any of you think it's stupid to pay thousands of dollars for some puppies or kitties when you could be paying off your college bill or buying a nice car? Who thinks that animal shelters are good, a little strict, but tend to condemn you if you submitt an animal to them and don't have a full health record of their vet care? Just curious.
