What feline disease causes a kittens nose to turn black? My kitten is about 8 weeks old and about 2 weeks ago he vomitied and had diarreah for a day or so, he is not gaining weight like the rest of the litter and is smaller and seems to be developing slower than the rest of them too and his nose has black splotches on it. My roomate thinks he my have gotten a concusion around the time all this started. Is this serious enough for a vet vist or will he snap out of it over time?
Our vet told us that diet treatment is the best and only method to treat feline kidney disease. Is this true? She just told us to keep feeding our cat Hill's KD food, and that there was really no other option that would treat the condition just as well. Is this true?
Has anyone heard of Rippling Skin Disease / Feline Hyperaesthesia? My 1 year old cat has always been a bit fiesty and woken us up by meowing loudly in the morning. Recently though he's become completely mental - jumping up walls, chasing thing that aren't there, looking possessed, groaning/meowing loudly as if he is frustrated, chewing his back and tail, grooming his back quite a lot, scratching himself and the skin on his back twitches or ripples sometimes too. I've been reading about Feline Hyperaesthesia and the symptoms seem exactly how my cat is behaving. I read that it can be triggered by fleas, as they become 'freaked out' by the creatures crawling on their body. I have been wondering if he's got fleas and we are going to treat him. Has anyone heard of this disorder of had a cat with it? It seems to be heard of more in America - I feel that my vet would laugh me out of the door here in the UK. Any other suggestions as to why my cat is suddenly behaving so manic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys xx Emmie Oh and if you're going to say "that's how cats behave", don't answer! I've had 5 cats and none of them have behaved this way! :-)
What treats can I feed my kitty who has feline urinary tract disease? He be very bored of the vet biscuits? He is on the Hills biscuits but I've heard its better for cats with this condition to be on a wet diet? I would love to give him some raw chicken or beef is this safe for him? The cat haven was very specific that he was to only have these biscuits for the rest of his life. I love him so I don't want to hurt him.
what is feline lower urinary tract disease? my cat had blood in her urine so i took her to the vets and they sent that out and there was no bacteria/infection or crystals. i have to take her back tuesday for blood work. when the vet called to tell me the urine test results, she said she think its that disease. so what is it? she mentioned changing a diet and adding a supplement so i'm guessing it's not debilitating. my cat isn't even 3 yet and i want her to be happy.
my cat have Feline Urinary tract disease, I just took him to the hospital and they inserted a catheter? what is suppose to happen and how is he suppose to act. he been sleepin alot and dont want to eat . yes,I took him to the clinic and that is when they gave him the catheter and i picked him up the same night.Iam just worried that he is so tired maybe because he did have all that catheter and all that into him but I have a follow up tomorrow morning.
Feline AIDS does anyone know if people can transfer the disease to another cat by being in contact? with a cat who is a carrier. Such as petting the cat when you visit. Can you bring the disease home with you? Have a 12 year old cat that has lost significant weight and test results were negative. But read that cats can have negative results in the end stage of illness. What do vets really know?
Help! Any vets out there? Need more info on "Feline Triad Disease"? My cat was recently diagnosed with "Feline Triad Disease". Guess it's a mild case, but would like to learn more. Not much info on the internet. It's also called trianitis. I just don't want to believe that this eventually becomes chronic. What causes this? The vet still hasn't confirmed the pancreatitis part, just the IBD and liver problems (although they did the exploratory surgery and his pancreas was slightly inflamed). Thanks for your help!
Can cats pass feline diseases to humans? I think my cat is sick and she nuzzles me a lot in the face when she's being affectionate. This may sound silly, but I just wanted to know if there were any possible cases of humans catching a feline sickness, like feline AIDS or anything similar.
If kitens are sired by a male cat who has feline aids, will they also have the terrible disease? I live in a country where unwanted cats are left to live on the streets and cope for themselves. It always breaks my heart because they are so hungry and ill. I have adopted many in the past 21 years. Recently Cat Aids is becoming a problem here. I have adopted a lovely little kitten two weeks ago. She seems healthy and fine. However she looks very much like a stray male whom I know has the aids disease. I am so worried he might be her father. I am afraid that she might have been born with his disease. When would she start to show symptoms of it, if it were so? My vet can't answer this question and I haven't been able to access anything on the net (many sites in English do not reply to direct questions from overseas.) Please reassure me! Thank you!
Can humans contract any feline diseases? Can humans contract feline diseases? I took in three kittens a month ago. They seemed very healthy until about a 9 days ago. Suddenly each kitten died one by one. Sick, vomiting, diarrhea, wouldn’t eat, drink, wouldn’t play, them become comatose & dies all with days within each other. The kittens got sick one by one & died suddenly. They weren’t poisoned. I thought they had feline distemper. I took one to the vet he gave me antibiotics & he said they was not getting enough nourishments (food). They were eating just fine until they got sick. Well… my question is. I cared for the kitten’s night & day for days. I let them in the house & even lad with them when they cried. So could I get sick or contract something from being around the kittens a lot? Also I have an older dog & a stray tomcat could they get sick also. Any info. would be helpful.

Prozac for Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome or Rolling Skin Disease? My 10-mth old cat who has been nothing but laid back and perfect recently began having "fits" where the muscles on his back twitch and roll and he frantically licks himself all over. When this is happening he also runs around fast, like he's trying to get away from himself, and looks totally out of it. I took him to the Vet last week and all of his blood work is fine. The Vet thinks he has an obsessive compulsive disorder and anxiety and wants to put him on prozac. I really don't want to have to do this - I'm scared it will change his personality and perhaps he'll become dependent on the meds. These “fits” aren’t happening all day long, but often enough. And it’s just hard for me to watch, and I don't want him to be uncomfortable or in pain. Any experience or advice?
Does anyone know about feline skin diseases? My cat has an area on her back just in front of her tail that she has been biting and trying to scratch so much that the skin in that area is scabbing and she's losing the hair there. I'm going to take her to the vet but I won't be able to go until next week. Does anyone know what could be causing this? It is localized specifically to that area and the area on the underside of her tail just above her rear end.
Feline Kidney Disease-what does it look like in an older cat? My 17 year old cat went to the vet because she was dinking a lot of water. The vet did some tests said she had kidney disease ad suggested a change in her diet. I changed to his suggested food and she would not eat it and lost weight. I gave up and went back to the food she likes. Now I notice that her bottom is wet most of the time and she has long hair so this is not pleasant. She still uses the litter box, why is there urine in her fur? What does kidney failure look like? How do I know when to let her go to kitty heaven?
Is constipation common in Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD)? My cat was catheterized as treatment for FLUTD. However, he has not been passing any stools for about more than a day. Is it normal? What can I do to improve his bowel movements? He was given Pred syrup, Nutrivite syrup and Celexin by the vet. He hasn't been drinking much and eating as well, but he puts his head near the water bowl and rests there. What does this mean? How can I encourage him to eat and drink? Thanks so much for your advice. He's feeling better now, after I brought him back to the vet for drip. He's walking around and drinking water, but is still not eating. I'm trying to find ways to make him eat his meals.
Feline vestibular disease? my cat has this desease and has had it for about 3 weeks. the vet took him off of his antibiotic after a week and gave him a shot of prednisone to help the process of healing. is there anyone who knows of a therapy or something i can do for him to help speed it up? ten points to best answer!!!! thanks beg
My cat is dieing from chronic feline lower urinary tract disease..help for a cat in a lot of pain? I found him as a stray and hes always been a 'sick cat'. After getting hit by a car & suffering a compound fracture ( and healing!) he developed chronic feline lower urinary tract disease.Hes already had multiple surgeries to unblock him with a catheter with no success. His last surgery was to have his genitalia changed to provide a wider opening. Our vet said if he continues to block theres nothing that can be done. Hes blocked again, what can I do to make him more comfortable? Are there any herbal remidies for cats in a lot of pain? Hes going to the vet tommrow, its 4 am and I cant stand to see him in pain! I know I feel so helpless! He sounds like hes crying. :-( Thanks for your support. Hes normally a very touchy cat and loves to be touched. Everytime I touch him he cries in pain. He was put to rest this morning. he was so sick that his veins were collapsing and the injection has to be put in his heart. I'm glad his suffering is over. He was in so much pain. Thanks for your help guys.
Feline Kidney Disease/Failure? The Vet says our cat has kidney failure judging by the tests. Has anyone ever had a cat that suffered from kidney failure? If so what did you find helpful if anything? Could it be something else? They apparently ruled out diabetes, and hyperthyrioidism but vets aren’t always right I have found. He drinks more water than normal, vomits a lot there was blood in his feces on a couple occasions. He urinates in the shower and floor drain which is odd. What do you think??? they did two tests one was BUN and the other was creatine...one was 40 something and the other was 3.
My 5 year old cat has been put down after a short battle with feline lymphoma. How did this happen? I had to put my Gavin down this morning due to complications from advanced feline lymphoma. The disease was far to damaging and quick for any treatment options. Four weeks ago Gavin was a perfectly healty cat with no signs of trouble. Suddenly he starts loosing weight and stops eating. A visit to the vet confirmed it was feline lymphoma and now he is gone and I am in disbelief. How can this happen? He was so young, healthy and full of life. He was also not FeLV and FIV + either and had never had any medical troubles. I'm just looking for some answers as everything I have read online says this should not have happened. At least not at this point in time. I just miss by Gavin.
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. Help? I need information on correct diets. The vet has given me Hills prescription s/d 4 a month then c/d for life. Is there anything else? Also- weeing, small amounts and often? Is that right for my cat now he's on the diet. No silly answers or I will report you. I'm sick of the foolish and mean people in here, when most people are trying to get serious answers! Thanks cat, I rang the vet to check. :)
When kittens/ cats have blood work done (checking for feline virus/ other diseases), where is it taken from? Just wondering how they do those tests because I read that if when you adopt from rescue shelters, cats especially, are already tested to ensure good health. Please help, especially if there are any vet. assistants out there who now about these procedures. Thank you!
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease - how much of this is actually related to diet? What else can I do? My cat was recently diagnosed with FLUTD; this is actually the second cat of mine thats been diagnosed and the previous one unfortunately died cause of it due to stones. Regardless, I wanted to know how much of this disease can be attributed to what food my cat is eating. My vet, since the last blockage, is prescribing one of the vet diets - is this really necessary? Also, as the question states, what else can be done to prevent this from happening? As it's costing us thousands to correct, so it would be nice to maybe maybe a bit more for things over the cats lifetime than to pay thousands every year if this, or another one of my cats, had to get it. Thanks,
feline to human transferable disease someone living with my daughter brought home a cat. Now all cats in house are dead and everyone in house is sick.
Treatment Cost for Feline Cystitis/Feline Urologic Syndrome/Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease? My 1 year old cat has been acting very strangely today. He is acting weak and has not been eating or drinking nor has he been using the liter box. After doing some research, I think it is possible that he has a blocked urinary tract. I will be taking him to the vet first thing in the morning (I work in the medical field and had to work tonight) and will pay whatever I need to for him to get better. I was just wondering if anyone knew about how much it costs for a urinary catheter treatment or the cost for other treatment options.
looking for information about feline diseases such as intestional disorders? i have a 1 year old manx cat who has continous bowl/intestional problems she is very small and just had a litter of 5 kittens 3 died due to genetic malfunctions i try to keep her on a strict diet but her runny bowls are getting worse getting her spade in november she eats good has plenty of energy now but had very little milk for the two remaining kittens now 4 weeks old and doing fine
Generally, how expensive is it to raise a cat with feline lower urinary tract disease? At our local animal shelter we have a cat that we have housed for over 8 months now (much longer than any other). Since she has this disorder all potential adopters are wary of looking at her. I have a bad feeling that the shelter may have to make a difficult decision concerning her status. Although I'm not exactly loaded with $$$ right now I'm considering adopting her myself if they ever do consider her officially "unadoptable". Anyone with experience with cats with this disorder? She is only one year old, so this could potentially be something very long term. Any thoughts, experiences, etc appreciated. Thanks. http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9765084 I should add that I don't "know" of our shelter having any pending decision on her. I just am putting two and two together on my own.
This question is for the Veterinarians who do research into feline leukemia? I believe I have discovered a potential cure for feline leukemia that saved my cats life, even though our own vet said there was no cure and wanted to put the cat to sleep, he soon learned that the treatment/cure I had discovered did work and advised me to find research vets that might be interested in using this basic knowledge in their research into this fatal disease. Is anyone out there interested in what I have to offer?
What are some holistic treatments for Feline Respiratory diseases.? Mainly feline rhinotracheitis virus and Chlamydophila felisi
Is Crohns disease in felines contagious? My two cats were diagnosed with a form of this disease. They have no signs of it at all. They might be introduced into a new living situation with another cat. I have tried to find resources online but have been unsucessful. Well when they were diagnosed the vet had mentioned if a third party was introduced it could be trouble. however i have found no evidence supporting this online. in addition to that it was like two years ago when this happened and i honestly can't remember everything he said.
what can we humans do to reduce the animal shelter over-population? There was a heartbreaking mass-killing of dogs and cats here in Las Vegas in the past week at one of the shelters here. Parvovirus and Distemper were to blame for the dogs' fate, and another feline disease was the cause of the cats being euthanised. I've never heard of a shelter putting down such a mass quantity of animals that always were in such dire straits to begin with. The animal world needs our help, and we constantly turn our backs on them. Is there any way to get the message to people out there that to spay and neuter your pets will help tremendously? What about the dogs and cats that are out there at the shelters, begging for someone to take them home and care for them? The shelter where this tragedy took place has now transformed into a "KILL" shelter, giving animals 72 hours to be adopted until they're put down. The humane society has suggested this. Sadly, it's the only option, according to them. If this were a human situation, they wouldn't kill anyone!!!
Feline Parvo-how contagious is it? my FIL's cat & all her kittens just died of Parvo. I was around all them just before they got sick. could i have brought the virus home to my kitties?? i know there's a couple feline diseases that people can bring home on their clothes, but i can't remember which ones. i'm worried, could my kitties catch it? how would i know if they did or if they're in the clear?
First time feline dental cleaning - should I do it? My vet recommended a major dental cleaning for my 13 year old cat. He has obvious dental disease - but no problems eating and is in no pain. My concern is not the cost - but his age and the fact that they have to use anesthesia. He's never been sick - thank God! - and he's in good health (had physical yesterday). But it concerns me that they have to put him to sleep. I know the health benefits and potential risk, but I'm still concerned. Any suggestions....?
Feline Distemper. Get it out of carpets? Does Distempaid work? I foster kittens and I just had a litter pass away from feline distemper. Its the first time i've dealt with this disease and its absolutely horrible!! The room they were in was carpeted and I heard it can be transmitted on clothes. Is there any way to get it out of the carpet? I washed all the food/water bowls and litter box in the bleach/water solution and then 2 runs in the dishwasher. I also washed the towels and blankets in bleach because they were white. Would a carpet cleaner like the rug doctor do anything?? I know they say nothing realy kills it but would that maybe lift it out. Any advice from anybody whos had to deal with this please let me know!! Also for the future I have heard of a product called distempaid which is supost to be very affective in helping the kitten fight the virus. does anybody have any experience with that??

Cats with Liver Disease? My 8 year old cat was diagnosed with liver disease. The vet is still trying to determine if it is bacterial, immune mediated, parasitic, fatty liver, cancer or infalmmatory bowel disease. She came down suddenly with a high fever, stopped eating and drinking and became jaundiced within three days, which the vet said was very quick. She now has a feeding tube, and so far is responding well to a high calorie solution and antibiotics. From what I have read, her chance of recovering and living a normal kitty life doesn't look too good. Does anyone else have any experience with feline liver diseases? Is it possible for her to make a full recovery or will I have to feed her through a tube for the rest of her life? My 8 year old cat was diagnosed with liver disease. The vet is still trying to determine if it is bacterial, immune mediated, parasitic, fatty liver, cancer or infalmmatory bowel disease. She came down suddenly with a high fever, stopped eating and drinking and although she was given IV fluids within 16 hours and force fed on days 2-3, she became jaundiced by the fourth day, which the vet said was very quick. She now has a feeding tube, and so far is responding well to a high calorie solution and antibiotics. She had no prior symptoms, other then vomiting once or twice a month. From what I have read, her chance of recovering and living a normal kitty life doesn't look too good. Does anyone else have any experience with feline liver diseases? Is it possible for her to make a full recovery or will I have to feed her through a tube for the rest of her life?
Umm, apparently my cat has early kidney disease? Any suggestions? My mother took my cat to a vet I had never heard of, behind my back, and apparently they diagnosed her with early kidney disease after a blood and urine test. What am I supposed to do?? I don't feel like I believe them. I want to take her somewhere else and get her checked out again. All the vet said to do was to feed her this crappy Hill's K/D food but my cat doesn't like it. Isn't this disease fatal?? I am in a little bit of shock since I just found out! Does anyone out there have any experience with feline kidney disease and possible options and treatments?? Thanks...... Thank you to all who answered. I appreciate the different opinions. I'm still upset about hearing the news, but I feel a little better now. Thanks. =)
need advice on how to care for kittens with cat herpes? We have a feral cat colony living in our back yard and we have been trying to tame the kittens in the past few years. But they all have this disease called feline herpes, and i dont know what to do about it. The kittens are fine for like the first few weeks then their eyes seal shut and they start coughing and sneezing and loosing weight and within a little while most of them are dead and those that survive are stunted. I was wondering if anyone has had any sucess with any treatments they have tried or if there are any vaccines against this disease. I dont want to loose anymore babys.
Has anyone heard of feline hyperestesia? I have a 3 y/o male tabby cat and about 4 wks ago he attacked? the tip of his tail so badly that we had to have the end amoutated. Since then he seems to be fixated on his tail. He will stare at his tail with a strange look in his eyes and then try to bat it with his paw. He also exibits other signs of this disease.
My cat has advanced kidney disease - has anyone been able to reverse this? Quartarrah was just diagnosed yesterday after a routine blood test. They said her kidneys are only working a third of what they should be. They sent me home with a 10-day antibiotic and new K/D food. I was thinking perhaps a feline detox may help (any recipies?) and are there herbal remedies that could reverse this? I love my cat, and want to give her the best chance possible to survive this longer than the few months the vet said she'd last. She's 14 years old and has been with me for 13 of them. She's a very feisty calico and has endured much in her life. I know that if there is something out there that could help her, it would work, because she's a fighter. If anyone has a similar story, please share!
